📝 Farm Notes

Next Sunday is November 1. That means today’s the last day for the Sunday farmstand and therefore a wrap on the weekly updates. Average first frost here is the week of October 20 and right on cue there was frost on the lettuce yesterday morning when we picked it. In prepartation for that we harvested most of the the cold sensitive crops like peppers. I see a lot of jalepeno slicing in my future. The only remaining summer crop is the warmth loving green beans which we cover at night with frost cloth. The soil is still around 60 degrees so it stays surprisingly warm under the blanket. The sugar snaps are super happy with the chill and very sweet (sugar acts as their antifreeze). Over the next couple of weeks the surface soil temperature will drop though and everything will be gone except fort the root vegetables and greens. That means it it is time to plant the over-wintered crops like garlic and the early spring flowers and that will be it for the year. Then onions are started in January. Now is when Sam ramps up making stuff for Pottery and Goats. Garlic dishes are the focus for this week.
